Muscat: Sohar Industrial City, part of the Public Establishment for Industrial Estates (Madayn), received approximately 49 investment applications during the first half of this year. It successfully signed 39 contracts, including 22 new contracts, 12 expansion contracts, 4 replacement contracts, and one renewal contract.
The total investment value of these contracts exceeds OMR 214 million for projects covering a total area of over 1.1 million square meters.
Engineer Abdullah bin Ahmed Al-Mayasi, Director General of Sohar Industrial City, stated that the total cumulative investment in the industrial city currently exceeds OMR 2.3 billion .
He added that the total leased area is 16,285,914 square meters out of a total developed area of 19,856,507 square meters. The total area of Sohar Industrial City (developed and undeveloped) exceeds 30.4 million square meters.
Al-Mayasi also noted that the total number of companies operating in the city has risen to 497, employing approximately 12,671 workers.
He added that among the most prominent projects signed during the first half of this year is the establishment of a ceramics factory, valued at OMR 25 million . The project will be built on an area of 241,000 square meters and will include three production lines, each with a daily production capacity of 30,000 square meters, bringing the total daily production capacity to 90,000 square meters upon completion of all production lines. The factory will begin operations with an initial production capacity of 60,000 square meters per day.
The Director General of Sohar Industrial City explained that it is planned to allocate 25 percent of the factory's production to the local market, while 75 percent will be exported to the markets of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and neighboring countries.
He emphasized that the project will contribute to adding value to the national economy by providing between 500 and 600 job opportunities, including more than 150 for Omanis, in addition to transferring expertise and promoting industrial development.
Al-Mayasi pointed out that the renewable energy project currently under construction in Sohar Industrial City represents a significant strategic step towards enhancing the clean energy sector in the Sultanate of Oman. With a projected production capacity of 93 megawatts, the project is part of a strategic partnership aimed at efficiently operating and managing the clean energy distribution network. This includes developing an integrated system for billing governance and providing energy services to investors in the industrial city, adhering to best international practices.
He explained that the project aims to deliver direct added value to investors by providing clean energy at a competitive cost and contributing to reduced electricity bills during solar power generation hours. It also ensures a continuous electricity supply and uninterrupted access to power during off-peak hours.
Al-Mayasi noted that the project site, located in Phase 7 of Sohar Industrial City, has been carefully planned to ensure a comprehensive infrastructure that supports renewable energy generation and distribution solutions. The project is expected to have a tangible environmental impact on the Sultanate of Oman by contributing to the avoidance of significant annual carbon dioxide emissions and achieving natural gas savings. This will bolster Oman's efforts to reduce carbon emissions and achieve energy security.
The Director General of Sohar Industrial City added that the factory will enhance the competitiveness of factories operating in the city in global markets by supporting their commitment to environmental standards and international emissions reduction requirements. This, in turn, will positively impact export opportunities and sustainable industrial growth.
Madayn is currently working on several projects in Sohar Industrial City, most notably a consultancy study on rehabilitating the existing infrastructure and support services for phases 1-6, and the completion of the infrastructure project for phase 7, in addition to a package of strategic projects within the Eleventh Five-Year Development Plan (2026-2030).
