Muscat: The Ministry of Social Development will launch next Saturday the first edition of the "Purple Saturday" initiative, under the theme "A Day with a Lasting Impact."
Through this initiative, the ministry seeks to enhance efforts aimed at community inclusion and empowering persons with disabilities, consolidate concepts of social responsibility, and motivate various public and private sector institutions to provide more inclusive environments, thereby enabling persons with disabilities to actively participate in various aspects of life.
The initiative, which is organized on the last Saturday of July each year, is considered one of the GCC initiatives aimed at raising awareness about the rights of persons with disabilities and enhancing their integration opportunities in society by encouraging commercial, service, and tourism institutions to provide qualitative services and initiatives that cater to their needs and offer them a smoother and more comfortable experience.
The initiative, which was launched for the first time in 2021, comes as an affirmation of the unified GCC vision in supporting and empowering persons with disabilities, enhancing their quality of life, and consolidating principles of justice and equal opportunity.
The "Purple Saturday" initiative aligns with the directions of "Oman Vision 2040" toward building an inclusive society that guarantees equal opportunities for all its members and promotes the rights of persons with disabilities. This is achieved by supporting national initiatives aimed at improving service quality, developing inclusive environments, and consolidating the values of respect and equality, in line with sustainable development targets and enhancing quality of life.
Adnan Mustafa Al Farsi, Acting Director General of the Directorate General of Communication and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, emphasized that through this initiative, the Ministry of Social Development seeks to raise community awareness of the importance of providing inclusive and friendly environments for persons with disabilities, encourage institutions to adopt practices supporting accessibility, and highlight the role of the private sector as a key partner in achieving sustainable social development, thereby enhancing social responsibility and instilling a culture of inclusiveness across various sectors.
He added that the initiative constitutes a platform to enhance cooperation among government entities, private sector institutions, and civil society organizations, contributing to unifying efforts aimed at empowering persons with disabilities, expanding the scope of services and initiatives provided to them, and promoting their full and active participation in economic and social life.
He explained that the colour purple, adopted by the initiative as its identity, carries global significance associated with persons with disabilities, symbolizing respect, dignity, appreciation, and solidarity. It reflects the initiative's message of spreading a culture of community inclusion, raising awareness of the rights of persons with disabilities, and urging various segments of society to contribute to providing an environment that is more inclusive and responsive to their needs.
