Muscat: The Environment Authority in Al Buraimi Governorate has, for the first time in the governorate, observed the breeding of the Accipiter badius. This is a significant addition to the biodiversity record and reflects the health of the natural habitats protected by the governorate's environmental sector.
The Accipiter badius is a resident bird of prey in the Sultanate of Oman, and documenting its nests is a rare occurrence, as it prefers to build its nests in densely branched trees.
The female usually lays two eggs, but in some cases, the number can reach six. The bird is between 26 and 30 centimeters long, with a wingspan of 60 to 70 centimeters, and closely resembles the Common Sparrowhawk.
The male is distinguished by its dark blue-gray upper body and black wingtips, while the female is less white on the abdomen and less black at the wingtips. Her cheeks are also reddish. This species is known for its high speed in flight, and the female is larger than the male.
Mohammed bin Salem Al Balushi, a biodiversity specialist at the Environment Department in Al Buraimi Governorate, stated that recording this breeding for the first time in the governorate is a positive indicator of the quality and stability of natural habitats. It also confirms the success of the Environment Authority's efforts in protecting wildlife and monitoring various species.
He added that this monitoring contributes to enriching the national database on biodiversity and enhances scientific knowledge of species distribution and reproduction.
Al Balushi pointed out that preserving trees and natural habitats is one of the most important factors in ensuring the sustainability of these species and their continued presence in their natural environments.
The Environment Authority continues to implement field monitoring and follow-up programs for wildlife in various governorates of the Sultanate of Oman, with the aim of documenting species, protecting their natural habitats, and enhancing national efforts aimed at preserving biodiversity, as it is one of the important environmental assets that the Sultanate of Oman abounds in.
