Oman adopts Advanced Air Mobility technologies

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman continues to enhance its orientation toward the future of aviation by adopting Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) technologies. This framework aligns seamlessly with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040 and the National Aviation Strategy 2040, thereby supporting innovation, sustainability, and raising the overall efficiency of the air transport system.

Advanced Air Mobility is considered one of the modern pathways in the aviation industry, as it relies on advanced aircraft, including electric and unmanned aerial vehicles (drones). It aims to provide flexible air transport solutions that support logistics, health, and humanitarian services, while simultaneously contributing to reducing emissions and enhancing the efficient use of airspace.

Within this context, the Sultanate of Oman witnessed the implementation of a practical experiment for air cargo using a drone. During this trial, a shipment of medicines and medical supplies weighing 100 kilograms was transported from the Military Technological College in Muscat to Al Jabal Al Akhdar, covering a distance of nearly 100 kilometers.

This experiment represents a promising applied model for the uses of Advanced Air Mobility in supporting supply chains, particularly in regions with specific geographical terrains, operating within a disciplined operational framework and clear regulatory parameters.

Rawiya Nasser Al Adawi, Director General of Civil Aviation Regulation, stated that the Civil Aviation Authority assumes its regulatory and supervisory role by issuing the necessary licenses, overseeing experimental operations, developing legislative frameworks and organizing policies, and ensuring strict compliance with approved safety and security requirements. She noted that the operational, technical, and executive aspects related to projects and applied experiments are handled by the relevant competent authorities, each within its specific jurisdiction.

She affirmed that, proceeding from the objectives of Oman Vision 2040 in building an economy based on innovation and technology, and within the framework of implementing the National Aviation Strategy 2040, the Advanced Air Mobility program is ranked among the top priority programmes.

She pointed out that the programme encompasses three main tracks, which include preparing the regulatory and legislative framework for Advanced Air Mobility in the Sultanate of Oman, designing and activating an air traffic management platform for drones, and enabling the gradual application of Advanced Air Mobility within a safe and controlled testing environment.

She further clarified that the programme aims to develop an integrated ecosystem for drones and associated technologies, enhance the sector's readiness to keep pace with global developments, and create a supportive environment for investment and innovation in a way that boosts the Sultanate of Oman's regional competitiveness.

She added that adopting Advanced Air Mobility in the Sultanate of Oman aligns with the international directions led by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) toward enabling innovative, safe, and sustainable air transport systems.

The Sultanate of Oman reaffirms its commitment to recommended international standards and practices, ensuring the integration of these technologies into the existing civil aviation ecosystem, while maintaining the highest levels of safety and the efficient use of airspace.
