Muscat: The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has issued a decision to amend certain provisions of the regulation organising the registration and use of radio frequencies and devices and determining their pricing, issued by Decision No. 133/2008.
This move aims to keep pace with and enable the rapid technological developments in the telecommunications sector, meet market requirements, and enhance the efficiency of radio frequency spectrum management in the Sultanate of Oman.
The draft amendment to the regulation aims to ensure the optimal utilisation of the frequency spectrum, encourage investment, and promote the deployment of telecommunications services. It also seeks to establish the necessary regulatory framework to enable the provision of several modern telecommunications services, simplify the procedures for obtaining a radio licence, reflect the true value of the frequency spectrum, and stimulate its efficient use.
It is expected that this regulation will be utilised to enhance the efficiency of managing and using the frequency spectrum as a limited national resource and to ensure its optimal utilisation. Furthermore, it aims to boost the attractiveness of investment in the telecommunications sector and emerging technologies by providing a stimulating and stable regulatory environment.
The regulation is also anticipated to support digital transformation through the deployment of modern telecommunications networks, enable emerging technologies that rely on wireless communications and satellites, and align radio telecommunications service fees with the evolution of services, thereby contributing to encouraging the adoption of modern services and technologies.
This regulation addresses Class I licensees providing satellite broadband services, Class III licensees, and licensees of aircraft and ship stations. The details of the regulation can be viewed on the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority's official website and its digital platforms.
