
Muscat: A specialized medical team at Khoula Hospital succeeded in replacing damaged vertebrae of through the thorax of a patient who was suffering from hemiplegia. The team used a keyhole incision technique and implanted an expandable cage (support device).
Through this precise intervention, the medical team was able to relieve pressure on the spinal cord and restore spinal stability. This contributed to remarkable improvement in the patient’s condition, enabling him to stand and walk again. The operation reflects the efficiency of the medical staff and the significance of using modern technologies at the hospital.
The 47-year-old patient had arrived at the emergency department two months before the operation. He reported suffering from severe back pain, coupled with sudden hemiplegia. Tests and X-rays revealed acute inflammation of the 9th and 10th thoracic vertebrae, in addition to an abscess within the spinal canal that exerted pressure on the spinal cord.
Dr. Sultan bin Salem Al-Barhi, Consultant Orthopaedic and Spine Surgeon at Khoula Hospital, said that keyhole incision technique helped minimize surgical intervention and potential complications, in addition to accelerating the recovery period and improving the patient's treatment outcomes.
