Muscat: “I didn’t think about nationality or religion. I saw lives in danger and did it for humanity,” said Shahzad Khan, recalling the moment he risked his life to save two Indian nationals trapped in floodwaters in Barka—a selfless act that has since united communities and inspired many across Oman.
Khan, a 25-year-old worker from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, became a viral sensation after a video showed him battling powerful flood currents to reach a partially submerged vehicle. While onlookers watched in fear, he smashed the car’s windows using stones and pulled two trapped occupants to safety moments.
In recognition of his courage, Elite Group Oman hosted a special ceremony honouring Khan’s life-saving actions. The event was attended by Syed Naveed Safdar Bokhari, Ambassador of Pakistan to Oman, who personally commended the young man.
Describing him as a “national hero,” the ambassador said Khan embodies the true spirit of compassion and bravery associated with the Pakistani people.
As part of the recognition, Khan was awarded a fully sponsored Umrah package to Saudi Arabia, along with a financial reward in appreciation of his selfless act.
Also present at the ceremony was M. Nadeem Azeemi, Chairman of the Pakistan Social Club Oman, who praised the rescue as a “shining example of selflessness.”
The event brought together members of both Pakistani and Indian communities, underscoring a strong message of unity and solidarity. Speakers highlighted that in moments of crisis, humanity rises above all divisions.
Khan’s bravery not only saved two lives but also strengthened the bonds of friendship within Oman’s diverse expatriate community.
