Surat:A tragic incident in the Indian city of Surat unfolded when an Oman's expat son, Advait Nair, died by suicide, according to Indian media reports. This incident has drawn significant attention, sparking protests in the college campus.
Advait Nair was a third-year BTech student at the Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT). His death prompted massive protests by students against alleged ‘torture culture’ and management negligence. Nair was from Kerala and his parents lived in Oman. He had taken admission to SVNIT on an NRI seat in 2023.
The 20-year-old Computer Science Engineering student, who had reportedly stopped attending classes, jumped off his hostel block around 11.15pm and died during treatment at a hospital.
Hundreds of students staged a protest against the SVNIT management, holding it responsible for the tragedy. Umra police registered an accidental death and launched an investigation. He had stopped going to class for the last three months, preferring to stay in his room.
“We received a call about the incident around 11.30pm on Sunday and rushed to the spot and the hospital and took the body for postmortem at Civil Hospital," the police said.
