NEW DELHI— India’s cabinet has approved a 1.86 trillion rupees ($19.42 billion) renewable energy programme aimed at strengthening power grids and expanding energy storage, the country’s information minister said on Wednesday.
Under the programme, 1.36 trillion rupees will be allocated to strengthen state-level transmission networks and enable the evacuation of up to 135 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity, the government said in a statement.
The funding comes as India works to expand its transmission infrastructure in line with the rapid growth in renewable power capacity.
The government has also approved a 500 billion rupees incentive scheme to support the installation of 50 gigawatt-hours of battery energy storage systems. The additional storage capacity is intended to help store surplus clean electricity generated during the day and improve grid stability.
India is targeting 500 GW of non-fossil fuel power capacity by 2030, up from about 304 GW currently.
