Jabal Akhdar: The 5th edition of the Omani Geological Heritage Exhibition, titled "Sustainability and Job Opportunities", commenced on Sunday in the Wilayat of Jabal Akhdar, Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, running until the end of coming December.
The opening of the exhibition was held under the auspices of Sheikh Mahmoud Rashid Al Saadi, Acting Governor of Al Dakhiliyah.
The current edition includes new corners introducing the "Al Hajar Geopark" project, which is considered the first national geopark project in the Sultanate of Oman, aiming to contribute to conserving geological heritage sites and utilising them in the fields of tourism, education, and scientific research.
The exhibition presents scientific and interactive content through several corners featured in previous editions, including the story of geological heritage, the geological diversity of the Sultanate of Oman, its history, the formation of Oman's land across geological eras, and the importance of conserving and sustaining geological heritage, alongside job opportunities in the field of geo-tourism.
The fifth edition also features introductory corners on the "Al Hajar Geopark" project, addressing the project's concept, objectives, and its tourism, scientific, and developmental significance.
The exhibition showcases a collection of distinctive geological heritage pieces, including a fossil estimated to be about 800 million years old, 3D scientific models of the extinct primitive elephant whose fossilised teeth were discovered in the Aydam area in Dhofar Governorate, and a dinosaur whose fossilised bone remains were found in Al Khoudh area in the Wilayat of A’Seeb, alongside other models and fossils highlighting the geological history of the Sultanate of Oman.
