MUSCAT: Travellers arriving in Oman can continue to bring personal belongings and gifts into the country without paying customs duties, provided they meet a set of updated conditions announced by the Royal Oman Police (ROP) Directorate General of Customs under Decision No. 110/2026.
Under the revised rules, the total value of duty-free personal belongings and gifts must not exceed OMR300. The items must be intended for personal use and carried in non-commercial quantities.
The regulations also reduce the duty-free cigarette allowance from 400 cigarettes to 200 cigarettes per traveller. Any quantity above the limit will not qualify for the customs exemption.
In addition, the exemption is available only to travellers who are not frequent crossers of customs checkpoints and are not engaged in trading the goods they carry, a measure aimed at preventing the misuse of personal baggage exemptions for commercial imports.
The updated provisions form part of broader amendments to the Executive Regulations of the GCC Unified Customs Law, which also introduce electronic customs clearance procedures and revise rules governing temporary imports, postal consignments, humanitarian relief shipments and imports for persons with disabilities.
The Directorate General of Customs urged travellers to familiarise themselves with the revised regulations before entering the Sultanate to ensure a smooth customs clearance process.
