Muscat: The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, represented by the Department of Medicine and Sports Sciences, inaugurated its medical and laboratory testing facility, marking the start of its operations and the provision of its services within the athletes' medical examination program. This step enhances the quality of medical care and reinforces the concepts of prevention and health safety in the sports sector.
The laboratory's operation follows the completion of all preparation and equipping phases. It will provide medical and laboratory testing services according to comprehensive scientific procedures, aimed at assessing the health status of athletes before their participation in training programs and competitions. This contributes to enhancing their safety, early detection of health problems, and reducing the risk of injuries and complications associated with sports practice.
The laboratory represents a specialised national platform for sports medical examination services. Its services will begin by examining promising (elite) athletes, and will subsequently include all athletes registered with sports federations and committees across various sports. This initiative is part of the Ministry's efforts to standardize medical examination procedures and improve the quality of health services provided to athletes.
The athlete's journey within the laboratory begins with a thorough medical history, followed by basic vital signs measurements, including blood pressure, heart rate, height, weight, and body mass index (BMI). A clinical examination by a physician, along with an electrocardiogram (ECG), then takes place, culminating in comprehensive laboratory tests. This ensures a complete medical assessment of each athlete's health and fitness.
The laboratory's operation relies heavily on the support staff. Nurses receive athletes, document their medical history, and conduct initial vital signs measurements, while laboratory technicians draw blood samples and perform tests according to established professional standards. This ensures accurate and timely results, enhancing the efficiency of the medical examination system.
