Muscat: The Misfat Al Abriyeen neighbourhood development project in the Wilayat of Al Hamra, Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, has reached 39 per cent completion, marking a key milestone in efforts to enhance one of Oman's most celebrated heritage destinations.
The project, valued at more than OMR810,000, is aimed at improving public services, strengthening tourism infrastructure and enhancing the governorate's appeal as a premier tourist destination, while generating greater economic returns from the tourism sector.
Implemented by Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, the project features a range of tourism-focused upgrades, including the construction of a glass bridge linking the village entrance to the valley area, a pedestrian walkway with safety barriers, paved pathways and traditional-style lighting. Directional signage with visitor maps and designated parking areas are also being added.
Misfat Al Abriyeen has emerged as one of the Sultanate's leading tourist attractions, renowned for its unique blend of heritage architecture, natural beauty and traditional farming terraces.
His Excellency Sheikh Sulaiman bin Saeed Al Azri, Governor of Al Hamra, said the village's achievements reflect successful collaboration between government entities, the private sector and the local community in line with Oman's commitment to sustainable tourism.
He said work is continuing to improve infrastructure and tourism services to enhance the visitor experience and further strengthen Misfat Al Abriyeen's appeal among domestic and international travellers.
Al Azri added that the next phase of development will see closer coordination among stakeholders to support tourism and development initiatives, reinforcing the village's standing as a global model for sustainable tourism.
Abdulrahman bin Saleh Al Abri, a member of the Misfat Al Abriyeen Tourism Team, said the village offers visitors a comprehensive tourism experience through guided tours, cultural and agricultural experiences, and visits to attractions such as the Omani Honey House, the Misfat Al Abriyeen Museum and Bait Al Siraj.
He said the village is home to eight licensed tourist lodges offering a range of accommodation options, while mountain camping, outdoor adventures and other experiential tourism programmes continue to attract growing numbers of visitors.
Al Abri said the tourism team also promotes the destination through the "Visit Misfat" platform, which showcases the village's attractions and tourism experiences.
He attributed Misfat Al Abriyeen's growing popularity to its focus on cultural and environmental sustainability and the active involvement of the local community, with residents providing traditional meals, guiding visitors, organising tours and creating authentic experiences.
Misfat Al Abriyeen was recognised in 2021 as one of the World's Best Tourism Villages, further cementing its reputation as one of Oman's premier heritage destinations.
