Muscat: As part of events marking the World Environment Day, the Environment Authority today launched Oman Environment Atlas.
Oman Environment Atlas comprises a comprehensive set of maps and data on environmentally sensitive areas, nature reserves and key environmental sites. The manual supports planning and sustainable development and enhances integration among different stakeholders.
Oman Environment Atlas figures among innovative projects of the 10th Five-Year Plan. It reflects the Sultanate of Oman's commitment to enhancing environmental knowledge and providing accurate data. It constitutes a first step towards developing an integrated digital environmental system that makes information accessible to all and towards utilizing the same to serve current and future generations.
Dr. Thuraya bint Said Al Sariri, Adviser to the Chairman of the Environment Authority for nature conservation—the chief guest at the event, said, “The Environment Authority’s celebration of the World Environment Day represents an important milestone for affirming collective commitment to protect the environment and preserve natural resources. It also seeks to consolidate global efforts to establish a more sustainable future for upcoming generations.”
Dr. Thuraya added that “This year’s celebration drives home the idea that nature is the resource that sustains our lives and forms an essential part of the solutions capable of addressing climate change in the world today.
Jihad bin Khalid Al Farsi, Head of a team codenamed “Bassmatuna” (our human print), gave a visual presentation that showcased methods for devising solutions. The presentation explained how young people can move from being consumers of information to innovators and initiators of environmental solutions that serve the sustainability of nature.
Al Farsi referred to climate action as a major national responsibility that requires constant cooperation among the government sector, the private sector and civil society institutions.
The event included three working papers: A working paper titled “The Sultanate of Oman’s efforts in climate action”, a working paper titled “The Arab youth movement to address climate change” and a working paper titled “Empowering the next generation”.
