6 people arrested in plot to kill Kuwait leaders, Interior Ministry says

Kuwait's Ministry of Interior said authorities arrested six people allegedly linked to the Lebanese, Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group for planning to carry out assassinations of leaders in the Gulf state.

The ministry said in a statement that five of those arrested are Kuwaiti citizens.

Those arrested were planning "assassinations targeting symbols and leaders of the state and recruited people to carry out these missions," the ministry said in a statement.

It added that it identified 14 more members of the group who had fled the country: five Kuwaitis, five more Kuwaitis whose nationalities have been revoked, two Iranians and two Lebanese.

The ministry said that those arrested had confessed to espionage and to joining a terror group. They have been referred to the public prosecutor.

This is at least the third Hezbollah-linked arrest in Kuwait in recent weeks. The Gulf country is among those in the region targeted by Iranian strikes in retaliation for the US-Israeli war.

Kuwait earlier on Wednesday said it shot down multiple Iranian drones but one hit a fuel tank at Kuwait International Airport, sparking a fire.
