Liwa: The wilayats of North Al Batinah Governorate come alive during the holy month of Ramadan, as a wide range of religious, social and cultural activities create a vibrant and spiritually uplifting atmosphere.
Souqs and roads across the governorate witness increased crowds of fasting residents preparing for Iftar, as families and friends gather daily to break their fast together before heading to mosques for Taraweeh prayers. Markets and streets are adorned with Ramadan lanterns and decorative lights, while mosques organise lectures, religious classes and Quranic competitions.
Mohammed bin Sulaiman Al Balushi from the Wilayat of Shinas said Ramadan in Shinas is distinguished by diverse religious events held at mosques, including Holy Quran memorisation and recitation competitions, often conducted after Asr prayers.
He noted that the Ramadan souq — formerly known as Al Arsa Souq — remains a major destination for residents who shop for daily Ramadan supplies, contributing to the festive spirit in the wilayat.
Mohammed bin Ali Al Mamari from the Wilayat of Liwa said the holy month strengthens social bonds and family ties. He added that Liwa Souq receives large numbers of shoppers purchasing fruits, vegetables and other food items throughout Ramadan. The wilayat also hosts various religious activities and Quran recitation and memorisation competitions.
Ahmed Abdullah Al Ghufaili from Liwa Hassad (Harvest) Team highlighted the group’s charitable initiatives aimed at supporting different segments of society during Ramadan. He said the team assists needy families by distributing purchase coupons for Ramadan supplies. This year, 600 coupons were distributed, amounting to a total of OMR18,000.
Government departments in North Al Batinah Governorate are also implementing religious programmes throughout the month, including a weekly family-oriented programme held every Friday after the Jumah prayer across various wilayats.
Mohammed bin Khamis Al Badi, Head of Islamic Affairs at the Awqaf and Religious Affairs Department in North Al Batinah Governorate, said the initiative aims to strengthen family stability and promote values of mercy and solidarity, in cooperation with government entities and private sector institutions.
He added that seminars delivered by preachers and family affairs specialists focus on reinforcing Islamic family values and educating the public on the importance of dialogue, understanding and effective conflict management.
Abdullah bin Shuhail Al Mamari said the wilayats of North Al Batinah also witness various sports activities during Ramadan, including football tournaments and volleyball competitions, further enhancing community engagement during the holy month.
