Tour of Oman: Swiss rider Mauro Schmid wins the Muscat Classic race

Muscat: Swiss cyclist Mauro Schmid of Team Jayco AlUla won the title of the Muscat Classic in its fourth edition, held as part of the Tour of Oman 2026, which is organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, in cooperation with the Oman Cycling Federation.

British cyclist Adam Betts of UAE Team Emirates finished second, while Spain’s Cristian Squarni claimed third place.

The race started from Al Mouj Muscat, with riders passing through several tourist destinations along the coastal road in the Wilayat of Seeb, before heading towards the mountain road in the Wilayat of Al Amerat. The route then returned to Darsait via Wadi Kabir, continued through Yiti and Qantab, turned left at Al Bustan Roundabout towards Sidab, and concluded in front of the State Council, covering a total distance of 171 kilometers.

The Muscat Classic is classified as a first-class one-day race in Asia, with the winner earning 250 points in the UCI World Ranking.

Meanwhile, the first stage of the Tour of Oman will start tomorrow over a distance of 170.9 kilometers. The stage will begin at Al Khuwair Square, heading towards the Ministry of Housing, then turning onto Al Thaqafa Street and the Ministries Bridge, before reaching the traffic light intersection in Al Khuwair at Doha Al Adab Street. The route will then continue along the highway towards Aqaba Bousher Mountain Road, pass through Al Mahaj in Al Amerat, turn at Al Hajer Roundabout, and proceed via Al Masarrat Hospital Bridge, Jahlout Al Sareen, Al Suwaqim, and Quriyat, reaching Fins Interchange and descending towards Fins Beach, where the stage will conclude at Hawiyat Najm.

The stage finish at Hawiyat Najm highlights its touristic significance. The sinkhole, located in the Wilayat of Qurayyat in the Governorate of Muscat, has a diameter of approximately 40 meters and a water depth of around 20 meters, forming a turquoise lake that attracts visitors for swimming and sightseeing.
