Seventh session of the UN Environment Assembly, chaired by Oman, concludes

Muscat: The seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7), held in Nairobi, Kenya, concluded with the adoption of an ambitious ministerial declaration aimed at advancing sustainable solutions for a resilient planet. The session was chaired by His Excellency Dr. Abdullah bin Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority of Oman and President of UNEA-7.

The assembly culminated in a series of pioneering resolutions addressing the world’s three major environmental crises: climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. Discussions centred on three key themes: strengthening cooperation among multilateral environmental agreements, reinforcing the link between resilience and justice, and renewing confidence in the UN Environment Programme’s ability to implement its strategic vision.

In his closing remarks, Dr. Al Amri expressed his satisfaction with the successful outcomes of the session and praised the collaborative efforts of participating delegations, the executive bureau, the Committee of Permanent Representatives, and the UNEP team throughout the week.

He emphasized that Oman’s vision, which guided its leadership of the session, is rooted in the belief that humanity and nature can thrive together. Sustainability, he noted, serves as a bridge between wisdom and heritage on one side, and innovation and the future on the other. He stressed that responsibility does not end with the conclusion of meetings but begins with the implementation phase, where decisions must translate into tangible impacts on ecosystems and communities.

With broad participation from countries, international organisations, and environmental experts, UNEA-7 marked a significant milestone in the trajectory of global environmental governance. Oman’s leadership in steering negotiations and managing sessions was widely praised for its effectiveness and consensus-building approach, resulting in concrete outcomes.

Throughout the negotiation week, Oman played a prominent role in shaping international environmental resolutions. Meetings addressed progress on key issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and waste, while also exploring ways to enhance cooperation among multilateral environmental agreements.
