Muscat: The Environment Authority has conducted a comprehensive national study to analyze the quality of water produced from sewage and industrial wastewater treatment plants across various governorates of the Sultanate of Oman.
The study aims to enhance sustainable water resource management, evaluate treatment efficiency, and assess the potential for reusing treated water for environmentally suitable purposes.
Dr. Amran bin Mohammed Al-Kumzari, Director of the Environmental Quality Department at the Environment Authority, stated that the study responds to the challenges facing Oman due to water scarcity, relying heavily on desalinated seawater and limited groundwater to meet growing demands.
He added that wastewater treatment plants play a crucial role in water management, enabling water reuse and reducing pressure on natural resources.
The study focused on analyzing water quality at several key sites, collecting field data, and conducting laboratory tests for various physical, chemical, and biological indicators.
The national survey covered 217 sewage and industrial wastewater treatment plants across all governorates of Oman over two years (2024-2025), involving site visits and collection of treated water samples according to precise scientific protocols.
The study aims to develop a comprehensive national database on treated water quality in Oman, enhancing environmental and water management plans, promoting sustainability efforts, and achieving a balance between development requirements and natural resource conservation.
