
Muscat: The Embassy of Italy in Muscat hosted a distinguished reception on Tuesday to mark the Italian National Unity and Armed Forces Day, a day of great national significance commemorating the unification of Italy and the courage of its Armed Forces.
Held under the patronage of Commodore Khalid bin Ali bin Mohammed Al Muqbali, Director of Military Sports at the Ministry of Defence, Captain (Navy) Mario Bertero, Italian Defence Attaché and His Excellency Pierluigi D’Elia, Ambassador of Italy to the Sultanate of Oman, the ceremony welcomed high-ranking officials from the Omani government and military institutions, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the business community, and friends of Italy.
The evening opened with the National Anthems of the Sultanate of Oman and the Republic of Italy, followed by remarks from Ambassador D’Elia, who emphasised the importance of this commemoration in strengthening the shared values of peace, unity, and international cooperation between the two nations. In his address, Captain Mario Bertero highlighted the mission and values of the Italian Armed Forces, said: “The Italian Armed Forces stand as a symbol of courage, professionalism, and dedication — serving not only the nation but also the global community through peacekeeping, humanitarian assistance, and maritime security operations. This day reminds us that strength lies in unity, and unity is the foundation of peace.”
During the ceremony, Captain Bertero presented the Italian Naval Academy Dagger (Khanjar), accompanied by a diploma signed by Admiral Enrico Credendino, Chief of the Italian Navy, to Sub-Lieutenant Said bin Hammed bin Ali Al Anboori of the Royal Navy of Oman, in recognition of his exceptional merit and commitment.
A highlight of the evening was also the presentation of the “Star of Italy” to Mrs. Donatella Donatelli, Head of Marketing, Communication & CRM at Mercedes-Benz Oman. The prestigious honour was conferred by Ambassador Pierluigi D’Elia on behalf of the President of the Italian Republic, in acknowledgment of her outstanding contribution to promoting friendship and cultural exchange between Italy and Oman.
Ambassador D’Elia, in his remarks during the decoration ceremony, stated: “Mrs. Donatelli represents the excellence and creativity that define the Italian and European spirit. Her achievements, both as a professional and as a proud Italian and European, have built bridges between our two countries and inspired mutual respect and admiration. The Star of Italy is a well-deserved tribute to her dedication and talent.”
Following the award presentation, the Italian Defence Attaché and the Italian Ambassador, joined the Guest of Honour, for the cutting of the celebratory cake, marking the culmination of the formal proceedings. The evening concluded with a festive Italian buffet, offering guests a taste of Italy’s culinary heritage and warm hospitality.
