TV BRICS- a voice for South, and multilateral information exchange platform for its partners

Moscow: Under the umbrella of Russkiy Mir Foundation, over 100 media partners from the globe had gathered in Moscow between October 18 and October 23 to share their views on digital transformation and the use of cutting-edge technologies to enhance the media outreach among the masses.

Amid a discussion on Western narratives against BRICS partners, the participants agreed to counter their agenda with a unified effort of the voice of the South member states.

While explaining the need to create TV BRICS, Aleksandra Burman, the Director of the International Cooperation Division, said the platform provides a multilateral information exchange among the member countries and to build a multi-polar media space, presenting the national agendas of its members, and uniting the professional communities.

It’s a 24-hour television channel in six languages which transmits multimedia information across its members. The audience reach is nearly 150,000,000 in almost 80 counties of the world.

Aleksandra Burman, said: “It's very important to have national media as partners to promote an objective image and agenda of those countries that we work with. So, we do not take news about those countries from some other media. For example, we take news from ANI about India, we take news from Brazil, from Russia, and so on and so forth. Therefore, it's important to show to the audience the view about the country from inside the country rather than bank on a foreign source.

“In this regard, we have created a media hub with its own production as well, so we produce text news, we produce video information, documentaries, and many formats of media. Well, at the beginning we started as a small TV channel, but as I said, we gradually grew and now we have a 24-hour TV channel in six languages Russian, English, Chinese, Portuguese and Arabic. Last year we launched a multimedia international portal in six languages.

“We established partnerships which comprise our TV blogs on national television in Brazil. We have weekly TV blogs on two TV channels in Brazil and we are also open to establish this kind of partnership with all other media partners as well. We also provide information support for various events like film festivals, events related to education. We have partnerships with more than 30 universities all around the world and more than 20 international film festivals in Russia, India, China, Brazil, Argentina, Cuba, Russia.”

She added: “We keep developing this network to a wider audience. We also participate in a number of community-driven projects. One of these is a media centre, BRICS+ Information Culture Media Centre, which was launched last year, in the same month. Here we host various events, conferences, telebridges, and various openings. Also, if we speak about media cooperation, we can have joint events, joint projects based on this platform. Also, we have a project which is called BRICS Global Media Tour, which you are aware of right now. The formats are different. Sometimes we organise it by ourselves. Only sometimes we make it as a joint project, like this time, together with the Russkiy Mir Foundation. So, in the framework of such projects, we invite our media partners to Russia and we're trying to show them the actual Russia. So, you can see it for yourself. We have been hosting this project for three years in a row right now and it's not going to stop so far. So, probably next year, some of you will again come to Russia, but maybe some other city, not Moscow. A couple of points about our editorial clause.”

“We are trying to promote a positive image of countries that we work with, as I said, not only BRICS. And we are focusing on such topics as culture, education, tourism, healthcare, sports, science. So, we do not cover hot news, we do not cover any conflicts, we are focused on a positive agenda. This is important to promote the positive image of countries that we work with. We work in various formats, as I said, text, news, video, documentaries. This one is actually the one we are really proud of, because it is the first project which was made together with our partners in various countries.”

“We have worked with Indian partners, so they could provide us with interviews and comments by experts from India. The same goes for Brazil, China, South Africa as well. And this project got several awards at international film festivals, and was very well received by the audience in various countries. Also, we are really enjoying the project.”

While talking about one of the most successful projects, which is called Laboratorium,

Alexandra said: “The host there was generated by an AI, her name is Luba. She tells the audience about recent developments in science, technology, and so on and so forth. There was the first season last year, now we're working on the second season, which will also be launched later this year. Another area of cooperation that we created to unify BRICS countries is our orchestra, which was launched two years back. We had an opening concert with music from BRICS countries. That's another way to show to the audience what the culture of other countries is. Here, you can see behind me the wall with the quotes in Latin.”
