Oman stresses need to protect children in conflict zones at UNICEF Executive Board

Geneva: The Sultanate of Oman has reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to supporting children's issues and strengthening its partnership with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

In its statement during the opening session of the Executive Board of UNICEF, Oman emphasised the importance of continuing close cooperation to contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and enhancing the protection and well-being of children worldwide.

Oman clarified that this cooperation is embodied in the implementation of the Country Programme for the period (2026–2030), which reflects the priorities of the upcoming phase within the framework of "Oman Vision 2040" and the Eleventh Five-Year Development Plan.

The programme is grounded in Oman's commitments to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The programme places special emphasis on expanding early childhood services and education, supporting adolescents and youth by enhancing their skills and broadening opportunities for their active participation in society, as well as focusing on social inclusion and the protection of vulnerable groups, particularly children with disabilities.

Additionally, it aims to improve the quality of health and educational services and entrench the principles of justice and equality.

Oman also welcomed UNICEF’s Strategic Plan for the period (2026–2029), which places children at the heart of the United Nations' work.

Oman stressed the importance of enhancing their protection in conflict zones and expanding the scope of effective partnerships to contribute to sustainable development and ensure a fairer and safer future for children worldwide.

In conclusion, Oman expressed deep concern regarding the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the occupied Palestinian territories and the severe famine and acute shortage of basic needs faced by children. It called on the international community to take urgent measures to ensure the protection of civilians, especially children, and to uphold the principles of international law.
